Saturday’s 1-0 win over Peterborough in the first-leg of the Sky Bet League One Play-Offs was a night that for all connected to Oxford United will remain in the memories.
That is especially true for the U’s Head Coach who has experienced the highs and lows of life as an Oxford fan more than most who have been in the dugout.
Reflecting on the win that was sealed with Elliot Moore’s header, Des Buckingham said the occasion is one that will live him for the rest of his career.
However, it’s only half-time in a two-legged play-off tie, with Wembley the carrot at the end of this semi-final.
Now, as the team prepares for Wednesday night at Peterborough, Buckingham says the team is fully focused on seeing the job through.
He said: “That was by far the best atmosphere I’ve heard at the Kassam Stadium with the noise, the atmosphere and the excitement around.
“It’s something we want at this football club and to send them happy with the win is something that will stick with me.
“We take that to a very tough game at Peterbourgh’s ground. It gives us something to take to Peterborough but we know they will come out against us.
“They play good football and have some really exciting players but so have we.
“Anyone watching the game will see a very good game of football for League One.
“We will focus as much of our attention on us. We know we will pay respect to Peterbourgh who have had a good season and won the trophy at Wembley.
“At the same time, we’ve shown we can not only compete but we can come away from important fixtures when the pressure is on and put ourselves in the best position.”
