A Senior News Correspondent and a supervising producer of GMA Integrated News have been chosen to be part of the Oxford Climate Journalism Network (OCJN).
Katrina Son and Zay Arguelles will join the OCJN’s sixth cohort, which will be conducted from July to December this year.
The sixth cohort, according to the announcement on its website, includes 100 journalists (38 men and 62 women) from dozens of countries and territories and from a wide range of news outlets.
The Oxford Climate Journalism Network (OCJN) is part of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford.
The OCJN is a program, according to its website, that “supports a global community of reporters and editors across beats and platforms to improve the quality, understanding and impact of climate coverage around the world.”
“The mission of the OCJN is to help journalists, editors, and media executives across the world develop their coverage of climate change. Our programme also supports newsroom leaders in identifying and addressing the range of operational, cultural and ethical issues that encompass climate stories and can help expand the coverage of this issue.”
The course is open to science, environmental or climate journalists as well as “journalists of any other vertical who are interested in adding the climate dimension to the topics they currently cover.”
“Our working assumption is that climate change is not only a topic but rather a systemic issue that affects all verticals of a typical news organization, including its culture, lifestyle, health, technology, architecture, food, sports or travel journalism.”
The program was launched in January 2022 and includes work with about 500 reporters and editors from over 100 countries.
Previously, GMA News Online managing editor Lou Albano was accepted as the only Filipino journalist to OCJN’s second cohort.
