‘Back to haunt Manning’ – Bristol City vs Oxford United prediction: The72

Bristol City host Oxford United in the Championship this weekend as we head into the sixth gameweek of the 2024/25 campaign.

Bristol City come into this clash thankfully to be returning to home turf after back-to-back days to forget away from Ashton Gate.

The Robins were easily dispatched of by Derby County in the last game before the international break, losing 3-0 at Pride Park. They were beaten by the same scoreline last weekend too, with Blackburn Rovers sending Liam Manning’s side back to the south west with nothing to show for their efforts.

Of course, this is the first time Manning faces former club Oxford United since leaving for Bristol City last November.

Speaking of the U’s, they’ve impressed upon their rise from League One to the Championship. Three wins and two defeats from the first five games as the divisional new boys sat in a strong 7th place, far above where many expected them to be sat.

Home form has been the key for Des Buckingham’s side. They’ve won all three games at the Kassam Stadium with both defeats coming away from home.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

James Ray

“I’m going to be interested to see just how this game pans out. Oxford United have really exceeded expectations upon their rise from League One and they could prove to be a tricky customer for an out-of-form Bristol City side.

“The return to Ashton Gate will be important for the Robins, and you feel they need a result here just to settle the nerves after a couple of poor results on the road.

“And, while the Yellows have been strong at the Kassam, they’re yet to enjoy the same level of joy away from home. That could give the hosts a way to a valuable victory.

“I’m not too convinced of their chances here though. The visitors could come back to haunt Manning as they reunite this weekend.”

Prediction: Bristol City 1-1 Oxford United

Harry Mail

Bristol City have had a tough past few weeks and pressure could start to mount on their manager if they don’t see an upturn in results.

“The Robins are conceding too many goals and need to tighten things up at the back.

Oxford United have adapted well to life in the Championship and are causing problems to their opponents.

“Des Buckingham’s side will be in confident mood and will fancy their chances of getting something at Ashton Gate based on recent form. They are carrying momentum and I can see them picking up all three points.”

Prediction: Bristol City 1-2 Oxford United
