Oxford named best university in the world…again

For the ninth year in a row, Oxford University has been named the best university in the world by Times Higher Education (THE), the longest streak of any university. This year’s rankings include 2,092 universities from 115 countries.

Oxford has held the top spot since 2017, succeeding the California Institute of Technology, who placed first between 2011 and 2016. The only other university to be ranked number one, since the rankings began in 2004 is Harvard University

Second and third place in the ‘THE World Rankings 2025’, are The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University respectively.

Phil Baty, THE’s Chief Global Affairs Officer described Oxford as: “a beacon for global Britain” due to its depth of “international research collaborations and its ability to draw-in international talent”.

THE build their rankings around five pillars: research environment; research excellence; the teaching environment; international outlook; and industry. Specific reference was made to the number of patents filed by the university, with being the highest university patent filer in the UK.

The university also credited this success to their “distinctive educational offer”; the tutorial system.

Vice Chancellor, Irene Tracy said:  “I am absolutely delighted that we have consolidated our position at the top of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for a ninth consecutive year. This achievement is testament to our extraordinarily talented and committed academics, researchers and staff, who deliver exceptional standards of teaching and learning and conduct globally impactful research. Above all, I am indebted to all of my colleagues at Oxford whose work continues to fire our imaginations, inspire generations, and confront some of the greatest challenges facing our planet.”

This year Oxford was also ranked first by The Guardian and third by The Times and the QS World Rankings.
