Of the seven permanent exits, four players were released, two more were sold, and Wembley hero Josh Murphy left on a free transfer after failing to agree a fresh contract at United.

A little over two months into the season, we had a look at how the permanent exits have fared since leaving the U’s.

Billy Bodin

The 32-year-old attacker was one of the four players to be released in May and subsequently joined Sky Bet League One side Burton Albion in July.

He began the season with three goals in three games, including a brace in a 3-3 draw at Mansfield Town.

However, he hasn’t featured since the end of August after suffering a calf injury in a goalless draw at Northampton Town.

Marcus Browne

Another of those to be released by United, the 26-year-old winger is yet to find a new club.

He featured in a Professional Footballers’ Association pre-season squad for free agents at the end of August, alongside former U’s midfielder Alex Gorrin and ex-United loanee Todd Kane, plus the likes of former Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle, former Arsenal right back Carl Jenkinson and ex-Manchester United starlet Ravel Morrison.

However, former West Ham United and Middlesbrough forward Browne has yet to sign for a new side.

James Henry

Seven years with the U’s came to an end for Henry when he was released this summer.

The 35-year-old joined Vanarama National League side Aldershot Town at the beginning of August, and is enjoying life with the Hampshire club.

Henry grabbed five goals in his first six games for the Shots and was named the National League player of the month for August.

He’s since added a sixth goal to his name for a Shots side sitting 18th in the National League.

Marcus McGuane

The 25-year-old midfielder moved to Championship rivals Bristol City for an undisclosed fee on August 23, but is yet to make his Robins debut.

He’s been on the bench for all seven games since joining the Robins, however is yet to get on the pitch.

McGuane didn’t feature in any of United’s matchday squads at the beginning of the season, and was left out for Championship games against Norwich City and Coventry City, plus the Carabao Cup victory over Peterborough United.

Josh Murphy

The aforementioned Murphy left the U’s as a free agent after failing to agree fresh terms, and opted to join Portsmouth at the end of June.

An ankle injury suffered during pre-season ruled him out until mid-September, but he has since started the last five games, and has two assists to his name, including in Pompey’s 1-1 draw at home against United prior to the international break.

Steve Seddon

Left back Seddon joined Scottish Premiership side Motherwell following his release by the U’s, and has made four appearances so far this season.

He hasn’t featured since the end of August though, and has dropped to the bench.

Oisin Smyth

Like Seddon, 24-year-old midfielder Smyth also moved to the Scottish Premiership, joining St Mirren for an undisclosed fee in mid-June.

He netted a brace on his Saints debut, coming off the bench to wrap up a 3-0 victory against Hibernian.

In total, he’s played eight times for the Buddies, including in both legs of their UEFA Conference League third qualifying round exit against Norwegian outfit SK Brann.
