Oxford PV Begins Commercialization of Record-Breaking Tandem Solar Technology

Oxford PV, a global leader in next-generation solar technology, has announced the commencement of its commercial deployment of perovskite-on-silicon tandem solar panels with the first shipment to a U.S.-based customer. This milestone marks the initial commercial use of their record-breaking tandem solar technology worldwide.

The 72-cell panels, which incorporate Oxford PV’s proprietary perovskite-on-silicon cells, are designed to produce up to 20% more energy compared to standard silicon panels. These panels will be utilized in a utility-scale installation, aimed at reducing the levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) and improving land use efficiency by generating more power from the same area.

Oxford PV has been advancing this technology since 2014 and recently achieved a module efficiency record of 26.9%. The first commercially available panels boast a 24.5% module efficiency, significantly surpassing traditional silicon technology. Production of these panels occurs at Oxford PV’s megawatt-scale pilot line in Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany.

David Ward, CEO of Oxford PV, commented, “The commercialization of this technology represents a major breakthrough for the energy sector. High-efficiency technologies are essential for the future of solar energy, and that future is unfolding now.”

Ward highlighted the role of solar innovation in accelerating the electrification and decarbonization of transportation, homes, and industries. “Perovskite technology enables utilities to expedite this transition by providing more energy at a reduced cost,” he added.

John Bromley, Managing Director – Climate & Clean Energy Investments at Legal & General, a long-time partner of Oxford PV, praised the company’s achievements. “We recognized the immense potential of perovskites for high-efficiency solar power generation early on and have supported Oxford PV’s journey to becoming a global leader. Their record-breaking efficiency and progress towards commercialization are pivotal for the climate transition.”

Looking ahead, Oxford PV plans to expand production from their Brandenburg facility to accommodate additional utility customers, specialty products, and pilot residential applications. The company also aims to scale up production to gigawatt levels at a future high-volume manufacturing site.
