Sunderland take on Oxford United in the Championship this weekend, returning to Wearside after a couple of away games.
And they’ve been a good couple of away results and performances from Sunderland, who’ve beaten Hull City and Luton Town in their last two away outings.
Sunderland won 2-1 at Luton Town on Wednesday night in what was a hard-fought game for Regis Le Bris’ side, with the Frenchman highlighting Luton Town’s physical style of play after the game.
The win keeps Sunderland in 1st place of the Championship table ahead of their game against 11th place Oxford United at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
The U’s have looked solid upon their return to the Championship. But Des Buckingham’s side have now drawn their last five in the league, with just three points separating them and Plymouth Argyle in 21st.
Sunderland trio walking suspension tightrope ahead of Oxford United
Against Luton Town, Sunderland picked up four more yellow cards, with Chris Rigg, Anthony Patterson, Luke O’Nien and Jobe Bellingham going into the book.
And for both Rigg and Bellingham, it’s an unwanted yellow card with the pair now on four yellow cards for the season so far, facing a one-game suspension if they pick up another.
Trai Hume is also on four yellow cards. Earlier in the season, Hume discussed a possible Sunderland suspension, suggesting that he might go easier into tackles to avoid a suspension.
When do yellow cards reset in the Championship?
After 19 Championship games this season, the one-match suspension for picking up five yellow cards in the league up to that point, resets.
As of now, Sunderland have played 11 games in the Championship this season, meaning that Rigg, Bellingham, and Hume need to get through up to eight more games without a yellow card to see their count reset.
The Championship disciplinary table this season, and where Sunderland rank
Sunderland currently sit in 18th place of the Championship disciplinary table this season, with a total of 20 yellow cards; 12 of which have come for Rigg, Bellingham, and Hume.
Preston have the most yellow cards with a staggering 35, and Middlesbrough the least with 16.
Plymouth Argyle have the most red cards with three already, whilst the Black Cats have one; Dan Neil was sent off for Sunderland against Burnley earlier in the season.
Le Bris will no doubt hope that his side can keep their card count low this season, and avoid any painful suspensions in this promotion-hunting campaign.
