The club have stated that they are ‘grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future’, and United’s captain Bruno Fernandes wished him ‘all the best in the future’.
The 54-year-old Dutchman took charge in 2022, and initially brought a sense of optimism to Old Trafford, showing promise by clinching a Champions League spot and reaching third place in the Premier League.
Despite high-profile signings, Ten Hag’s side began to show vulnerabilities after injuries and inconsistent performances. Ruud van Nistelrooy, the former United striker, will step in as interim manager while the club searches for a permanent replacement. Possible options included Thomas Tuchel (before he ruled himself out of the job in managing the England national team), Brentford’s Thomas Frank and the former England manager Gareth Southgate.
Whoever is appointed next will face significant pressure from United’s demanding fanbase and the competitive setting that is the Premier League. Van Nistelrooy’s task in the short-term will be to renew the squad’s confidence, address defensive issues, and boost morale.
