Arizona Men’s Basketball Adds Trey Townsend Via Transfer – University of Arizona Athletics

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona men’s basketball head coach Tommy Lloyd announced the addition of 2024 Horizon League Player of the Year Trey Townsend as transfer for his final season of college eligibility for the 2024-25 season. Previously, Townsend had a decorated four-year career at Oakland University.

“Trey has continued to get better and better each of his four years in college,” Lloyd said, “Developing into the conference player of the year this past season. He is highly skilled and has shown his ability to excel against the best competition. We are fortunate to add he and his family to the Arizona basketball family.”

Townsend hails from Oxford, Michigan, which is located near Detroit, and was a starter at Oakland for all of the 129 games he played in over four years. He averaged 14.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists while shooting 50% from the floor and 73.9% at the free throw line on his way to winning the Lou Henson Award as the top player in mid-major college basketball. He was also a two-time Horizon League All-Academic team honoree, earning honorable mention as a junior and first team recognition as a senior.

The continuous on-court development has been evident for Townsend over his college career, going from a 24% shooter from the 3-point line over his first two seasons to 38% over the final two seasons. He also increased his scoring from 8.4 points per game as a freshman to 17.3 points per game in 2023-24.

Taking a closer look at his 2023-24 season, Townsend was named the MVP of the Horizon League Tournament where he scored 38 points in the championship game to lead the Grizzlies to the NCAA Tournament where they would go on to upset Kentucky and take NC State to overtime. He went on to score 17 points and grab 12 rebounds against UK before going off versus NC State with 30 points and 13 rebounds while playing all 45 minutes.

His name is all over the Oakland record book, ranking second in career starts, fourth in minutes, sixth in rebounds, steals and blocks, eighth in points and field goals made, tenth in free throw attempts. His 21 career double-doubles are also tied for sixth in program history.

Townsend played high school basketball at Oxford High School, where he was honorable mention all-state as a junior and senior. He broke the Oxford single-season scoring record with 456 points as a senior and finished second on the school’s career points list. The dual sport athlete garnered all-state honors in the high jump and set a school record in the event.

His mother, Nicole, and father, Skip, both played basketball at Oakland, with his dad helping the Grizzlies to the first 20-win season in program history in 1987. He has four siblings – Zach, Rachel, Jesse and Lauren. Zach is committed to play for Oakland’s men’s soccer team starting in the Fall of 2024.
