Bolton’s League One play-off final heartache was a bitter pill to swallow, but one fan’s disappointment was more than most.
The Trotters went into the Wembley clash against Oxford United as favourites to earn promotion to the Championship, but fell to a 2-0 defeat thanks to two goals from Josh Murphy.
Disappointed supporters faced a long drive back to Lancashire after sacrificing their weekend in the hope of seeing their side promoted, but one fan called Alex, revealed to Jason Cundy and Jermaine Pennant just how much he had sacrificed to be present at Wembley.
Speaking on Kick-Off, Bolton fan Alex said: “I tell you what, I flew from Dubai yesterday morning and now I’m stuck on the M1 on the way home.
“The only saving grace from today is that I’m booked into a curry house at 9.30 by our mam’s in Worsley.
“That’s the best bit of my day, ordering a big spicy curry.
“I’m stuck on the M1 and the worst bit is that I’ve got 10 lads in Dubai saying ‘has anyone seen Alex?’
“Honestly mate, I wish I never bothered. I’ve had some disappointments in my time and I jinxed myself this week.
“Ten years ago we won 5-0 against Stoke in the league and then went to Wembley and got absolutely battered – what did we do in March? We battered Oxford 5-0 at home and ended up getting turned over at Wembley. I’ve had enough.”
Alex went on: “Honestly, I can’t remember one highlight from that game. I’m nearly home and we could have played until tomorrow and we still wouldn’t have scored.”
Asked when he’s heading back to Dubai, Alex said: “Tomorrow morning.
“I’ve literally come back for 48 hours and the worst bit was that my wife was due to give birth on Friday and we got her induced a week early!
“It’s a good job her mother doesn’t listen to talkSPORT, but yes we did.
“Tomorrow I’m going to have to go home with a big smiley face and say that everything is alright but I’m absolutely soul-destroyed inside.
“That was disgusting. I put all this effort in to show up and where were they? My goodness!”
