“Traffic heading out of Bicester and Bicester Village is at a standstill.
“Avoid the area.”
One fire engine with six firefighters from Bicester attended after the call came in at 5.30pm before crews left the scene at 6.30pm.
A spokesman for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service on Friday said: “On arrival, the crews were faced with a small car, well alight, they closed the road with the help of the police, deployed two firefighters in breathing apparatus who then extinguished the fire using high pressure hose reels.
“The cause is unknown at this stage but is believed to have been a mechanical defect.”
The incident came on the same day as another car fire which occurred in the Cherwell area over in Banbury.
Earlier in the afternoon, a car fire was reported on the M40 southbound between Banbury and Cherwell Services.
