New Delhi: Delhi has emerged as the highest-ranked Indian city in the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2024, securing the 350th position among the world’s 1,000 largest cities. Bengaluru, often referred to as India’s IT hub, achieved the 411th rank, surpassing Mumbai, the country’s financial capital, which stood at 427th. At the other end of the spectrum, Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh was ranked last, in 1,000th place.

The report, released on Tuesday, highlights the standings of cities based on a combination of scores in five crucial categories.

The index is calculated by assessing scores in five categories: Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment, and Governance. These scores are then combined to determine the overall ranking for each city. In 2023, the cities included in the report represented 60 per cent of global GDP and 30 per cent of the world’s population.

New York continued its dominance, achieving the highest overall rank with a perfect score of 100 across all five categories. London and San Jose followed, securing the second and third positions, respectively.

In India, Delhi notably ranked 55th in Human Capital and 108th in Economics. Bengaluru stood at 179th in Human Capital and 171st in Economics. Mumbai, despite its economic significance, was ranked 915th in terms of Quality of Life, while Thrissur in Kerala secured the 757th position in the same category. Conversely, Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh ranked lowest among Indian cities in Quality of Life, at 966th.

All Indian cities included in the index scored 380 in the Governance category.

The index also highlighted some paradoxical rankings. For instance, Kyiv was ranked 311th, ahead of Delhi. Similarly, Myanmar, under military control since 2021, secured the 680th position, outperforming many Indian cities.

The Oxford Economics Global Cities Index serves as a vital tool for understanding urban performance worldwide, taking into account economic output, educational attainment, resident well-being, climate volatility and political risks, and more.
