Oxford comes alive this weekend as Oxford Preservation Trust opens the doors to over 100 buildings for free as part of the annual Oxford Open Doors weekend.
This year’s programme is bursting at the seams with exciting things to do and extraordinary places to explore. From Shakespeare’s The Painted Room to the courtyard at Oxford Castle, the top of Carfax Tower and the Sheldonian Theatre, Rewley Road Fire Station or the Swing Bridge, all are there to check out during Oxford’s Open Doors.
See professional stone carvers at work, enjoy music from the City of Oxford Silver Band and the Ghaetta Medieval Band and experience 1,000 years of history at Oxford Castle & Prison. Climb to the top of the Mound and take in the views across the city.
Get up and close to a real fire engine and meet the firefighters who help protect the city, take a walking tour including the Greyfriars 800th anniversary walk and don’t miss the chance to step back in time and discover WW2’s Slade Camp in the foothills of Shotover Country Park where local historians will conduct walking tours and former residents will talk about what life was like there.
Discover the Real Tennis Court at Oxford University, go behind the scenes at the New Theatre and the world-famous Oxford Union Debating Chamber.
And don’t miss out on your chance to visit the Oxford colleges from Harris Manchester (where the D-Day Landings of World War II were planned), to Christ Church, Pembroke, Worcester, Exeter, Mansfield, Wolfson, St John’s, Magdalen, Reuben, Balliol, Green Templeton, Wadham, Kellogg, Somerville, St Cross, St Edmund Hall and New College, which are all opening their doors.
Anna Eavis, CEO of Oxford Preservation Trust said: “Oxford Open Doors enables you to experience – free of charge – the city’s oldest and newest buildings, its gardens, its hidden corners and its many, many surprises. And you’ll discover how these places are used today, for innovation, research, art, culture and community. Join us on the 14-15 September to find out more!
