An unappealing betting event in which the veteran TREACHEROUS can record a 15th win. He has to bounce back from a poor run at Bath last month but his earlier efforts make him a good shout on these favourable terms. Aidan Andabettin drops in class and can feature, with Dion Baker best of the rest.
Fort Augustus can confirm recent C&D placings with Skellig Isle and Sweet Sonata and should go well, but Rogue Bullet and CURZON are dangerous opponents. The former leaves the impression a bigger effort is lurking, but Curzon has shown plenty of promise on turf and makes his handicap debut at a realistic level.
Loch Leven sets a clear standard, but she isn’t progressing and may not be straightforward. She’s respected, but there are some interesting newcomers on show, and perhaps one of them will be good enough. Transparent and String Of Pearls need a market check but CREST OF LIGHT makes appeal on paper and gets the tentative vote.
The return to 7f should be of benefit to Bouvier, while the longer trip should suit Kodi Fire (second choice), too. CHAR shaped well at Salisbury three weeks ago, though, and he can put that experience to good use. El Bosh is a newcomer of note.
This revolves around QAZAQ, who won in fine style on his debut at Chelmsford last December. He’s been absent since but has been found a weak-looking race for his comeback. Amanda Perrett’s horses are running well, and her newcomer Huntly Lodge is second choice, ahead of Tex.
He had been looking exposed, but BERRY CLEVER got off the mark in fine style over C&D last week and can defy a 6lb penalty. King David has a progressive profile and is feared most, ahead of fellow C&D winner Thorntonledale Max. The maiden Rawaasi can give another good account.
A maximum field, but it is easy to have reservations about the majority. Ten Commitments and Unreal Connection should feature, while the enigmatic Racing Demon (second choice) is in good form and has the talent to win off this mark.
A chance is taken on BIGBERTIEBASSETT, however, with the return to 1m looking beneficial. He’s dropped a long way in the weights, and blinkers could give him a lift.
Dolce Courage looked promising last autumn, and it is likely that there is plenty of mileage in his opening mark, but he does have a 12-month absence to overcome. Gorak (second choice) can feature despite his big weight, while a few of these lurk on dangerous marks if returning to their best, notably Silver Sword and Lion Of War.
WHITCOMBE ROCKSTAR (NAP) has been a revelation this season though and his latest C&D win, where he was well positioned but looked to have more to give, offers hope that he can deal with another rise in the weights.
A fascinating finale. Cadogan Place catches the attention as he tackles a new trip on handicap debut. Andrew Balding’s charge edged out the much missed Hidden Law on Southwell debut (1m3f) back in March.
Some of the others have questions to answer, not least Peking Opera, and the returning Scottish Anthem. Therefore, the tentative suggestion is this year’s Northumberland Plate third DUKE OF OXFORD, who possesses the ability, stamina, and track craft to expose any flaws evident elsewhere.
