Loanee delighted with clean sheet on U’s debut

The Leicester City loanee joined the U’s on deadline day, and has had to remain patient for his opportunity.

However, he was thrown in from the start at home to Burnley, partnering Elliott Moore at centre half, as Ciaron Brown switched to left back.

United fought their way to a goalless draw against a Clarets side relegated from the Premier League last season, and Nelson was happy to mark his debut with a clean sheet.

He said: “You can’t complain with that. We had to do a lot of defending, but when we did, we did it well.

“It was a long 90 minutes, and one where one little slip-up, they can get in with their quality. We had to be really resolute and work as a team.

“I’ve been here a couple of weeks now, and it’s been good to be in training to see what the vibe is and how everyone trains.

“Getting in is a different kettle of fish, but it’s really good to get some minutes.

“Clubs like this, there is always going to be good competition. We’re in the Championship, so you’ve always got to be prepared to battle for your spot.

“You’ve got to step up, and first of all, be defensively sound. I think we did that as a unit, and we’re very pleased with that.

“There are periods in the game where I felt I could’ve done better, but I feel like I grew into the game and grew in confidence.”

Nelson meanwhile praised the support given to him by Moore and Brown, who helped guide the loanee during the game.

“The skipper has got loads of experience, and Ciaron as well, so to have them alongside you is a dream really,” said Nelson.

“They’re talking you through it and giving you tips and stuff, and I’m taking stuff from them. That can only make me better as a player.”
