Former Sunderland loan man Amad Diallo is still someone who’s loved on Wearside. And he clearly still has a lot of love for the club as well.
Amad Diallo might well go down as the best loan player to ever grace Sunderland, following his whirlwind 2022/23 season with the Black Cats.
Joining on loan from Manchester United following Sunderland’s promotion from League One, Diallo scored 14 and assisted three more as he helped Tony Mowbray’s side achieve a top six finish.
Sunderland wanted to re-sign Diallo from United. But Erik ten Hag had other plans for the Ivorian.
He made nine Premier League appearances last season and has six so far this season, as he steadily cements his place in the Red Devils’ XI.
Now, Sunderland under Regis Le Bris look poised for another top six finish, perhaps more, after completing a nine-point week with a 2-0 win against Oxford United at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
Amad Diallo watches Sunderland win over Oxford United
During the game against Oxford United, just as the sprinklers unexpectedly went off as the U’s mounted an early break, Diallo posted a picture on his Snapchat story.
The 22-year-old was watching the Sunderland game on his laptop, posting with the caption ‘vamosss’.
Diallo’s United aren’t in action until Sunday with a game away at West Ham United.
Interestingly, Diallo is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of this season, though United hold the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.
Will Manchester United hand Amad Diallo a new contract?
Manchester United signed Diallo from Atalanta in January 2021 for a total reported fee of £37million.
But he’s made just 18 Premier League appearances for the club since. United, no doubt, won’t want to lose Diallo on a free transfer, but Diallo may soon feel as though his future lies elsewhere, if he doesn’t already.
It was widely reported last month that United were preparing a new contract offer for Diallo.
But next summer, should Sunderland get promoted and Diallo is only under contract for another year, it wouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility that Sunderland mount an ambitious pursuit for the fan favourite.
He clearly still holds a lot of love for the club and promotion would give the Black Cats the money to potentially make a deal happen.
