Matt Phillips: Oxford United sign ex-West Bromwich Albion winger

Championship newcomers Oxford United have signed former West Bromwich Albion winger Matt Phillips.

Phillips, 33, was one of seven senior players released by the Midlands club at the end of last season, ending an eight-year stay at The Hawthorns.

“I’m delighted – it’s a great opportunity for me and I can’t wait to get started,” Phillips told Oxford’s official website, external.

“I want to have another successful season with the team here and I feel like I have a lot to offer. This is an opportunity for me to come and play football and really go and do something special.”

The Kassam Stadium will be Phillips’ fifth different permanent home in the Football League after previous stints at Wycombe, Blackpool, QPR and West Brom as well as a brief loan spell with Sheffield United in 2011.

The 16-cap Scotland international, who has scored 67 goals in 506 senior appearances across his career, is the U’s 10th summer signing.

Des Buckingham’s side will host Norwich on Saturday, 10 August, on the EFL’s opening weekend.
