Member numbers surge at West Oxfordshire leisure centres

Better, which operates the centres for West Oxfordshire District Council, also reported a 28 per cent increase in overall attendance.

Partnership manager, Matt Simmons, attributes the growth to several factors, including a refresh of gym and studio areas and a broader range of classes being available.

Mr Simmons said: “The teams have worked hard to accommodate customers’ needs.

“We’ve introduced women-only classes and swimming sessions, for example, along with menopause-specific events.

“We’re also offering activities for older people such as 50+ badminton, walking netball, and social tea dances.”

He believes there is a greater understanding among the public regarding the health benefits of physical activity.

He also highlighted a 25 per cent increase in customers joining the Healthwise exercise referral scheme.

Councillor Tim Sumner, executive member for leisure and major projects, added: “We have a wealth of offerings and continue to invest in our leisure centres – it is fantastic to see more and more people enjoying them for fitness and social purposes.

“If you haven’t already visited our leisure centres throughout West Oxfordshire, we invite you to come along. Try a new class or activity and meet some brilliant people from your local community.”

The centres are run by charitable social enterprise GLL under the Better brand.
