Official: Oxford United sign Jamie Cumming from Chelsea

It’s a sad day for the WAGNH commenting system’s auto-filters, as this post will mostly likely be the final ever mention of Jamie Cumming. The young goalkeeper has today completed a move to Oxford United, joining them on a permanent transfer after spending the second half of last season there and helping them earn promotion to the Championship.

The 24-year-old had just one year left on his Chelsea contract, so it’s unlikely that the transfer has any significant monetary compensation attached to it (perhaps some future considerations).

Cumming, who will turn 25 in September, joined the Academy at the age of 8 and departs some 16 years later. In recent seasons, he had had successful loans in the third and fourth divisions at Stevenage, Gillingham, MK Dons, and as mentioned above, Oxford United. Championship football will be a step up, but there’s not reason to doubt that he will rise to the challenge.

“I’m very excited to be back at Oxford United. It was a joy to be part of last season’s success and I want to achieve great things again.

“I’m coming back to a place where I feel comfortable and it’s a club that is ambitious and wants to go in the right direction. I learned a lot from my time here and I was desperate for this opportunity to step up and play in the Championship.

“I now need to prove to everyone here that I can play at this level and I’m very confident in doing that. This is a huge opportunity for me and for the club and I can’t wait to get started.”
