Oxford Civic Center hosts job fair for former Lee Brass employees

OXFORD, Ala. (WBRC) – A job fair was held Tuesday at the Oxford Civic Center for the men and women who lost their jobs at Lee Brass.

Carl Brady with East Alabama Works with 22 companies and came to help those former Lee Brass employees get back on their feet.

“When the opportunity arose to help out the folks from Lee Brass we were happy to jump in and join with the EDC here in Calhoun County and with the Career Center here in Anniston,” said Brady.

Industries from as far away as Atlanta provided options and job opportunities to the former Lee Brass employees.

“The fact that these workers are dislocated, they’ll qualify for WIOA benefits so we can offer the training at Gadsden State for free. We have people that can assist enrolling,” said Alan Smith.

Providing free educational opportunities for the former Lee Brass employees, Alan Smith of Gadsden State says it’ll strengthen their certifications and fast track their education.

“And because of the fact that Lee Brass was a member of the Calhoun County Chamber, we also are offering classes at buy one get one opportunities if someone doesn’t qualify for any of the financial assistance, we can also offer scholarships as well,” said Smith.

With over 100 former Lee Brass employees looking for jobs today, many companies say the skills they possess are impressive, and exactly what their looking for.

“We have some of the same machinery, we are a foundry so they will be coming into the same type of work that they did at Lee Brass,” said Carol Mason-Kimble of Renaissance Manufacturing.

Many employers at the job fair encouraged these workers to not get discouraged because they have a lot of options, and a lot to offer a company.
