Oxford United have agreed a deal for Leicester City defender Ben Nelson despite rivalling Championship interest, as per Football Insider.
Oxford United are hoping to make their spot in the Championship stick this season.
Des Buckingham’s side were promoted against the odds last season, beating Bolton Wanderers in the play-off final at Wembley.
The U’s have made the initial jump up the second tier well and with a little fine tuning they could be fine this season.
Reports broke yesterday linking Swansea City, Portsmouth and Derby County with a move for the Foxes defender Nelson. Bristol City had held previous interest but turned their attention elsewhere, and it seemed likely Nelson would depart the King Power Stadium on loan.
However, it is now reported that Oxford United are set to win the race for the defender and a deal is expected to be confirmed by tonight.
A talented addition
Nelson, 20, played in just five Championship games for the Foxes last season.
He is unlikely to really make an impact whilst they are in the Premier League at this stage of his career and he could do with a full year of first team football under his belt as soon as possible.
Nelson has had a couple of loan spells in League Two, but is yet to test himself as high as the Championship and it could be an important year for him which could determine where he spends his long-term future.
Oxford United will be able to provide him consistent first team minutes and it will be a good platform for him to showcase his talents.
Looking ahead
Oxford United have just one win in their opening three league games, but they have competed well in most outings and will have a positive outlook of the season ahead.
They lost to Coventry City midweek in the Carabao Cup second round and now all focus for them will be on their league campaign.
Up next for the U’s is a home clash against Preston North End tomorrow afternoon.
Paul Heckingbottom was recently appointed at Deepdale and he got off to a winning start in the league last weekend beating Luton Town.
It will be a tight game and one where both sides will be eyeing up three points, but a win for the hosts will go a long way for their confidence in the early stages of the new season.
