A somewhat quiet week for Oxford United with their only Championship fixture falling foul to the weather at the weekend.
The U’s were due to face Plymouth but gusty winds put a halt to the fixture going ahead.
Elsewhere, Des Buckingham’s side found out their opponents in the third round of the FA Cup and a young defender has moved to a National League side on loan.
Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Plymouth Postponed and Golding Goes
Oxford Draw Exeter in FA Cup
The week began with the third round draw for the FA Cup and the U’s face a trip to Exeter City.
Des Buckingham’s side made the trip to Devon on the final game of last season, with a win ensuring a playoff finish.
Oxford haven’t reached the fourth round of the competition since the 2019/20 campaign when Karl Robinson’s side played out a goalless draw at Newcastle, before losing in extra time in the replay at Grenoble Road.
Oxford United Defender Departs on Loan
On Friday, Oxford defender James Golding joined National League side Southend on a short-term loan.
The 20-year-old has already spent time away from Grenoble Road this season, with loan spells at Banbury, Dartford and Maidenhead.
Even with the long-term injury to Leicester loanee, Ben Nelson, it appears that game time for the U’s remains some way off so a loan spell away will help both his development and get some much needed minutes.
Plymouth Postponed
The U’s were due to face relegation rivals Plymouth at the weekend but the match was postponed due to forecast winds of up to 70mph.
While it was the correct call to cancel the fixture, results went against both teams at the weekend with Coventry, Portsmouth and QPR all picking up vital wins.
There were also important points gained for Luton and Preston in their fixtures against Swansea and Sheffield Wednesday, respectively.
No date for the rearranged fixture has been announced at the time of writing.
