Oxford United Weekly Round-Up: Unbeaten Run and First January Signing
U’s Closing in on First January Signing
The week began with reports in the Netherlands suggesting that Oxford are close to their first January signing.
Ole Romeny, a 24-year-old Dutch forward, arrived in England for a medical, per the report, ahead of a potential £1.6 million move from FC Utrecht.
The report added that he will sign a three-and-a-half year deal with the club in what would be a record transfer paid by the U’s.
The striker has turned out for the Netherlands at various youth levels but has decided to represent Indonesia at senior level.
First Away Win for Oxford United
On New Year’s Day, Oxford travelled to Millwall and picked up their first away win of the season.
Przemyslaw Placheta provided his second assist in three games as Ruben Rodrigues saw his looping header leave London with all three points.
As a result, Gary Rowett has now picked up nine points from his three games in charge and are five points clear of the relegation zone ahead of a trip to Preston at the weekend.
Ebiowei Loan Ended
On Friday, Oxford confirmed that winger Malcolm Ebiowei had returned to his parent club, Crystal Palace.
The 21-year-old managed just six appearances during his time at Grenoble Road, with a total of just 64 minutes of football.
Reading Man Targeted By Oxford
Reading midfielder Harvey Knibbs is on the radar of Oxford, according to Darren Witcoop.
The 25-year-old has scored nine goals in his last 11 games for the Royals and is of interest to several Championship clubs during the January transfer window.
Point at Preston
Oxford remain unbeaten under Gary Rowett after the U’s picked up a point at Preston.
Ruben Rodrigues gave Oxford the lead after a mistake from Preston goalkeeper, Freddie Woodman.
The goal came against the run of play, with the hosts on top for the majority of the game. And that pressure eventually told in the second half when they netted a deserved equaliser.
Both teams chased for a winner but took a share of the spoils.
Goodwin Joins the Latics on Loan
On Sunday, Oxford striker Will Goodwin joined Wigan on loan until the end of the season.
The 22-year-old has managed just 11 appearances since joining from Cheltenham last January, so a loan spell away will present him with some much-needed game time.
Romeny Joins Oxford United
Oxford United made their first signing of the January transfer window with the arrival of forward, Ole Romeny.
The 24-year-old penned a three-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed fee, with reports suggesting it could be as much as £1.6 million.
Head coach, Gary Rowett, said: “Even though I’ve only recently arrived at the Club, I have had many conversations with the recruitment team about our plans for this January window.
“Very early in those discussions, Ole’s name was brought to my attention and, having watched a number of his clips, I’m pleased we could move quickly to bring him into the Club.
“He is a very creative forward, who can help both in scoring goals and making chances. He arrives with a wealth of experience at a really good level in the Netherlands and it will be exciting to see what he can deliver.
“I have had a really good opportunity over my first few weeks to assess the squad in training and competitive action, and the recruitment team are working hard to make some additions this month to help us in our ambitions.”
Ed Waldron, Head of Football Operations, said: “We have studied Ole throughout the season, and we believe he is a talented player who still has plenty of room to grow.
“Having looked to the Eredivisie previously, we have watched Ole play on several occasions in person and we are confident he will improve the quality of our group.
“Following Ole’s decision to represent Indonesia in November, the Club’s connections allowed us to move quickly to ensure we could bring him in at the earliest possible opportunity and give him the best chance of success this season.”
