Oxford University beaten by Cardiff and Leeds in new rankings

The Times has ranked the seven best UK university cities for parents to enjoy while their offspring attend the institutions.

Although Oxford does make the cut with its historic architecture and stunning scenery, it is ranked at sixth behind arch-rivals Cambridge.

The list pits Edinburgh in first with Cambridge, London, Leeds and Cardiff all coming before Oxford which leaves Nottingham in last place.

“Whether your seen-on-screen references are Brideshead RevisitedSaltburn or Harry Potter, it’s a thrill to see the dreaming spires, college quads and centuries-old pubs of Oxford in the flesh,” reads the article.

“If you don’t know the city, a walking tour can be a wonderful thing, especially as guides have special access to colleges — two-hour private tours cost about £120 (oxfordguides.co.uk).

“If you’re dropping off or visiting undergrad offspring and are on the hook for lunch, Browns, on Woodstock Road opposite St Giles Church, has long been the go-to (mains from £16; browns-restaurants.co.uk).

“For non-college sights, you’ve the British Museumish Ashmolean (free; ashmolean.org) and, together, the Museum of Natural History (free; www.glam.ox.ac.uk) and John Soane-like Pitt Rivers Museum (free; prm.ox.ac.uk).

“Get your bearings from the top of St Mary’s (£6; universitychurch.ox.ac.uk) and wander along the river down past Christ Church Meadow.

“Stay in the centre of town in what was until recently the upper floors of the department store Boswells and is now a 101-room hotel, the Store, with sophisticated Scandi-style rooms.”
