Headington Fairtrade on London Road just outside Oxford city centre has been a staple sustainable product store since it opened.
The shop was advertised for rent earlier this month, but has now posted a notice in its window that it will be closing permanently.

A statement from the shop said: “We are sad to announce the closure of Headington Fairtrade.
“We have traded for 15 years, which is a massive success, and have spent almost £1million with fair trade suppliers.
“Part of the reason for closure is the much wider availability of fairtrade products in supermarkets and online. These are all really positive things.
“Changing shopping habits and rising costs have affected future viability, but Headington Fairtrade’s staff, customers and volunteers have supported small, fairtrade suppliers all over the world, for the past 15 years.”
The shop will remain open while stocks last.

Customers were asked to visit the specialist shop in Headington after a fairtrade shop in Oxford city centre, in Cornmarket Street, closed in 2023 due to a reduction in footfall.
Oxford has been a fairtrade city since 2004, but changes to shopping habits, challenges like Covid-19 and the cost of living crisis, and changes to the centre itself have made it hard for the ethical traders to continue.
The “prime position” retail unit at 104 London Road is being advertised to rent for £28,500.
Headington Fairtrade has been approached for comment.
