The van, belonging to Howe & Co, was on fire on Friday, November 29 in the afternoon on the A423.

This led to a road closure and major delays.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue said crews were on scene for around two hours, using an appliance from Slade Park Fire Station and two appliances from Rewley Road Fire Station.

The Decontamination and Environmental Protection Unit from Didcot Fire Station was also required for their “specialist equipment and skills”, said the fire service.

Initial crews closed both sides of the fire due to cylinders being affected by the fire.

The fire service said crews managed to utilise the light portable pump to lift water from the river below so they had a “good” supply of water to extinguish the blaze.

In a statement posted on social media following the fire, Howe & Co 66 said: “To say we are devastated is an understatement.

“Most importantly and thankfully we would like to reassure everyone that Simeon and Libby are safe and unhurt albeit a bit shocked!

“Sadly despite the best efforts of ourselves, the other motorists and Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service there’s not much left of the van from the fire which started at the front of the van.

“Apologies to anyone whose journeys were affected around Oxford today we know it caused road chaos.”
