OXFORD, Ala. – The fourth game of the season for Oxford High School wasn’t the “sharpest,” as head coach Sam Adams described it, but the end result was a lopsided 40-7 win over Pinson Valley to keep Alabama’s 5th-ranked 6A team unbeaten.
Maybe it was the constant threat of rain, which came heavily during pregame warmups, or the week-long distractions that accompany homecoming week, but Adams believed his offense didn’t have its typical focus and could have done a bit more.
“We left a lot of yardage and a lot of points out there,” he told local media.
Oxford still a number of highlights.
Louisville quarterback commit Mason Mims threw for 197 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, while 2026 running back Caleb Wynn ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Oxford added a field goal and a safety to complete its scoring.
“It feels good,” Mims said of the unbeaten start of the season. “We still need to come out every day and compete, try to get better.”
Mims entered the game ranked second across Alabama for most passing yards with 971 yards. Friday night’s effort pushed him over 1,000 yards on the season. The strong start to his senior campaign is a reflection of his off-season effort to continually improve, which included competing at multiple Elite 11 Regionals.
“Most throws that I couldn’t make last year, I feel like I can make a lot easier this year,” Mims told Cardinal Authority. “I feel like I’ve gotten better communicating with the guys, so I think I’m a better leader this year.”
Louisville offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Brian Brohm was also at Oxford High School Stadium to watch Mims. The two have formed a strong relationship that began last year and it was key in Mims choosing to announce for the Cardinals last November.
“Coach Brian, he’s a great guy,” Mims said. “I love talking ball with him. I can’t wait to get up there in December or January and get to work with him.”
Mims has made many visits to his future school, including an official visit in June. He confirmed with Cardinal Authority that he’ll be at L&N Stadium for UofL’s ACC opener against Georgia Tech on Saturday, Sept. 21.
Mims has been impressed by Louisville’s 2-0 start and noted (Tyler) Shough has been “balling out.”
“He’s been putting up crazy numbers,” Mims said of the UofL quarterback. “I just can’t wait to go up there and watch him next week.”
During the last two seasons at Oxford High, Mims has thrown for 4,765 yards and 51 touchdowns. As a junior, while helping his team to a 9-3 record and the second round of the 6A playoffs, Mims completed 71.2% of his pass attempts.
He currently holds an 88 grade from 247Sports, which the network defines as an athlete that “projects as multi-year starters at the Power Four level and potential difference-makers with NFL upside.” The industry-generated 247Sports Composite places Mims as the No. 33 quarterback nationally.
