This Is Going To Hurt author Adam Kay to visit children’s hospital

Mr Kay, who lives in Oxfordshire, left medicine to pursue comedy and writing and documented the weird world of an NHS labour ward in his bestseller which was turned into a TV series starring Ben Whishaw.

Among his other work the father-of-two, who is married to TV producer James Farrell, is one of the UK’s bestselling children’s authors.

He will host play sessions for children in hospital across National Play in Healthcare Week which starts on October 14, highlighting the importance of play for children in hospital and celebrating the work of health play practitioners across the NHS.

The sessions are part of the tour for his new book and instant number one bestseller Dexter Procter, The 10-Year-Old Doctor.

Along with illustrator and fellow comedian Henry Paker, Mr Kay will visit Starlight services at Oxford Children’s Hospital next week to entertain children with readings, play and drawing workshops.

Speaking about his work with Starlight, Mr Kay said: “Hospitals can be very scary places for kids, and Starlight makes a very real difference to how young people experience our health services.

“I’ve seen their amazing work in action, and I can’t wait to hit the wards for these events.

“Hopefully I’ll get a big smiley-face sticker.”

Puffin Books is donating copies of the first instalment of the new comedy medical mystery series, which demystifies medicine and hospitals for young readers, as part of a permanent mini library for children at the hospital.
