Oxford United and their poor form continued as Des Buckingham’s side lost at relegation rivals, QPR.
A second-half brace from Sam Field meant the U’s have picked up just one point from a possible 15.
Here are three talking points from the game.
Oxford United Lose at QPR
Didn’t Take Chances in First Half of Dominance
Oxford headed into the break on the back of a pretty decent 45 minute display.
Buckingham’s side had more possession, more passes and created better chances but were unable to convert that into goals.
And it would prove costly as after the restart, the hosts took the lead in a game that you felt would be decided by the opening goal, and that was the case in West London.
Goals Came from Oxford United Mistakes
On the goals, both came from mistakes from Oxford United as a collective.
Field was left in acres of space on the penalty spot as a cross was nodded down to him for the opener while Peter Kioso, who was making his return after illness, needlessly gave the ball away on the edge of the box which led to the R’s second of the evening.
Not only were both goals preventable, but the U’s didn’t apply the same pressure when they were on top in the game, which comes in the next point.
Lack of Urgency, Desire and Intention
Despite a fairly positive first half, the goal changed the game and the Oxford players looked deflated after the QPR opener.
There was a significant lack of urgency to fight and get a leveller, the players showed little desire to get themselves back into the game and the intention was negative.
Not only did heads drop but more worryingly, the performance dropped against a team which they should be looking to take points from.
The U’s will lose against the likes of Middlesbrough and Sheffield United but this was arguably the first time this season that Buckingham’s side have been beaten on desire and application rather than ability.
