U’s boss explains absence of winger from matchday squad

Edwards wasn’t included in the United squad to face the team he joined at the age of six and progressed through the academy ranks.

The 26-year-old winger ended an almost 10-month hamstring injury nightmare when he came off the bench for the U’s at Bristol City last month, but it was an ankle knock at Portsmouth which ensured he played no part against the Baggies.

Buckingham said: “He picked up a knock down at Portsmouth just before he came off in the 60th minute from a tackle just on his ankle, so we’re just looking after him a little bit.

“It’s nothing to do with previous injuries, so it’s hopefully not too much longer until we see him again.”

He added: “We’re trying to make decisions that we feel are right for the game. We can’t forget the players we’re missing.

“We’re still missing Joe Bennett, Josh McEachran, Cam Brannagan, Matt Phillips, Shemmy [Przemyslaw Placheta], and there are a few that I’ve missed there that are not in the squad.

“We’ve gone about trying to build squad depth and that’s been tested, but those that step in take their opportunities and they have to continue to work as they have been.”
